Lew Sapieha Award

The Lew Sapieha Award, granted under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, is given in recognition of the winners' great merits in the shaping and development of civil society in Belarus and in building an independent and democratic Belarus, open to Europe and respecting the best historical traditions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and in building and development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe.

The initiative to establish the Award in 2006 came from the Centre for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw and the Eastern Europe College in Wrocław, which were joined and supported by the University of Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University and the Universities of Poznań, Wrocław and Białystok. The main concept of the Award is that the Laureates will give visit lectures about Belarus during the academic year at various universities, where they will be offered good living and working conditions, and the opportunity to realise their potential as lecturers and to make Polish students familiar with Belarusian issues. If a Laureate writes a book as a result of the stay, it will be published.

The Secretariat of the Chapter of the Lew Sapieha Award is located at the Centre for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw.

The winners realise their two month research stays at the Jagiellonian University from 15 September till 15 November.

Iwan Wyhowski Award

The Iwan Wyhowski Award is to honour outstanding Ukrainian citizens and their merits in the development of science and culture, the shaping of civil society in Ukraine and building democratic Ukraine, directed towards Europie, respecting the best historical traditions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commmonwealth as well as present and future relationships between Ukraine and Poland and Europe.

The Award was established in 2014, following the initiative of the Centre for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw.

The initiative was supported by: the University of Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University, the AGH in Kraków, the Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań, the University of Wrocław, the University of Białystok, the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University of Lublin, the Catholic University of Lublin, the University of Rzeszów, the Technical University of Łódź, Politechnika Poznańska, the Technical University of Warsaw, the Technical University of Wrocław, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, the University of Economics of Katowice, the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, the University of Łódź, the University of Silesia, the University of Warmia and Mazury, the Agricultural University of Kraków, the Eastern Europe College in Wrocław and the Ossolineum in Wrocław.

The Secretariat of the Chapter is located at the Centre for East European Studies of the University of Warsaw.

The winners represent the humanities and life sciences: the Main Award (12-month research-didactic stay) and 6 four-month reserach stays.
